hawaii - the review number five

This is one more review about Big Island in Hawaii.

After all THAT we were driving in a forest because our GPS told us to drive there. It was a road, but then it wasn’t a road any more. I kept driving because the GPS said it is the right way to drive. Then it was more forest, and there was a car that was broken down, and old tires in the pits and a lot of things that were scary. This is what it looked like outside (but I took that photo before the really scary parts). It was called “unpaved road”:

I was thinking that our GPS was being manipulated by someone who changed out destination because they want to rob us and kill us in the forest. I told my friends to lock their doors, and we all locked our doors but the stupid thing was that our roof was open and someone could jump into our roof!!! But we couldn’t stop to close it so I had to keep driving, so I just drove really fast. 

Then after some time we got to the end of the road and it went onto a real road and nothing happened. So then we knew it was okay. Then we just drove to our hotel.

Our hotel was the “The Jacaranda Inn”. It was an expensive hotel so it was like a treat. It was such a nice hotel and we had a nice bathroom and a lot of towels all the time. 

Then we drove a bit, then it was night and we had dinner and THIS happened. Then we we slept, then we woke up and we had breakfast and we drove more north and we saw an airport that had no planes and I was pulled over for speeding but they were nice and we went back and then we decided to go on the big mountain and we started driving there and saw a lot of Nene. The mountain was called Mauna Kea and is really high.

I was driving and we got really high up. I was dizzy and I asked my friends how they fell and they said they feel fine so I kept driving but I was really not fine. Then we got higher all the time and got to the visitor center. We had to stay there 30 minutes to acclimate, and I told the man there that I am dizzy, and he said we shouldn’t drive to the top of the mountain (8 more miles) if I feel dizzy. But I didn’t tell my friends.

Then we ate instant noodles to go up, then I said I feel dizzy and my friend said she feels sick, but then we were so close and I felt better and we decided to drive up.

The mountain is so high up (you can read about it on its Wikipedia page) that it went above the clouds. I was okay but also dizzy and would have driven the car off the cliff, but I was driving really well. We went to the very top, took one photo and then we drove down because we were feeling really bad (and I think no one noticed but I drove onto a pedestrian street and nearly crashed into a big white observatory thing, but then I didn’t).

We drove down and then I drove us home and we saw a lot of Nene again. Then we were tired and we went to sleep and in the night I woke up a lot and felt very sick.

The next morning we woke up and I felt fine. We had an appointment to go riding at Parker Ranch. We went riding for two hours. I was riding on Geronimo (that is kind of like a Mexican language and it means “one who yawns”). He was so slow and lame. He was so slow walking down. Then he went faster and we did good. Then we were riding towards home and he was really fast and wanted to be the first one! Then he got slow again. But I liked him. This is him:

Then it got late and we went home again and we went to sleep.

The next day we drove back to the airport and we took our flight and went back to San Jose. The Supershuttle to San Francisco didn’t come and we had to take a different one. They gave us our money back.

That was my trip review. I like Big Island so much, you should go there!!!!!

This is my part four of my review about going to Big Island in Hawaii.

We had our first day in Hilo. We used our GPS to find a good place to have breakfast, but I think our GPS map was old (like our guidebook) and we didn’t find the places where it told us there would be a place to eat. We looked for others, and then we picked Starbucks. We had to drive a while to get there. But then, after a few seconds, we drove by a drive-in Starbucks! So we didn’t have to go any further. (Also: a funny thing is that I said earlier that if we were in San Francisco, we would already have passed so many Starbucks, but not in Hilo, because Hilo is small and weird, but slightly bigger than Kona, but still doesn’t have much stuff). We didn’t go in the drive-in, but it was the first time I saw a Starbucks with drive-in. I had a Frappuccino and two butter croissants. The guy there warmed up my croissants! I never had that before. I didn’t like it.

Then we went to buy water, because we wanted to go to the beach and we had no more water (we were thirsty also). We bought it at a Chinese shop. I also took pistachio nuts, and my friend (she is Chinese) said: “You like those???”. I said yes, and she was so shocked. I think she thought it is a special Chinese thing that “white” people don’t know or don’t eat. I even like the ice cream!!! It’s my favorite! So I do like pistachios, and Chinese people too.

Then we went to Coconut Island to go to the beach. It’s kind of like an island in front of Hilo, but they put a bridge between them so it feels like it’s not really an island. This is what it looks like when you walk over the bridge:

The island has mainly rocks and some grass in the middle. We were early, and there weren’t a lot of people there. Later when we left everyone was barbecuing. Maybe because it was Saturday.

The island was nice and we went into the water and enjoyed the sun and I read my book. (I finished the book already and I will review it soon)

I recommend it for barbecues and playing ball on the grass and for going with kids, because there is a big stone tower where they can jump off of.

Then we were bored. We went back to our car and wanted to go somewhere. We looked at our guidebook and went to a waterfall. It was called “Rainbow Falls” because of a rainbow that you see there a lot (I think early in the morning). We didn’t see a rainbow though. We thought it is a waterfall to swim in, but it just had a trail that went around it for walking. We didn’t do that because we were dressed for the beach and had all our stuff (we couldn’t leave it in the car - people break into cars a lot there).

We left again. We drove to find ice cream, but the place from our guide book wasn’t there anymore. But we passed another ice cream place so we went there. They had very few flavors, and they weren’t very tasty. But we all shared a Mango ice cream. My friend bought an Ukulele at the shop next door. 

Then we decided to go to a new beach. We put it into our GPS (from the guidebook) and drove there. There were so many people there, and they all had kind of tents and were barbecuing with their whole family on the grass. The tents weren’t sleeping tents, they were really big open tents for people to sit inside and eat. They were really elaborate and had wood flooring. They looked like they took a long time to build. I don’t know if they build them every weekend, or every day, or if they have them there always. I’m not sure what they were doing.

We went to the water but it was a stoney beach again. We lay down and tried to be comfortable but there were stones all over and it didn’t feel too nice. I managed to find a good way to lie down and I tanned my butt. It was nice, then a little girl came because my friend was blowing bubbles. She wanted to blow bubbles too. My friend gave her the bubble head to blow on it, but she couldn’t make bubbles. Her sister told her to come, and she took the bubble thing and she said “Thank you” and she left with it. She was so small, I was surprised that she was so polite.

Later she came back and tried to do more bubbles with us. Then I saw that when she opened her mouth, her mouth was full of grills!!!! Like silver ones. But only in the back, not like rappers have it in the front. They were silver. It was so strange, because she was much to young for such a fashion statement, and she was so young that she probably didn’t need her teeth filled yet, and even if she had, they don’t use silver or gold anymore, but nowadays they use white. So that was strange. 

She never blew a single bubble. This was her:

We stayed and then we left to have lunch. We stopped at a cute little house. It was by the water and close to our hotel. I think it was called “Harrington’s” but I’m not sure if that’s the one. This is basically what it looked like (I took the photo out of the restaurant window). They had lots of Koi fish in their pond and also two turtles:

I decided to order “Catch of the Day” because they meant fish and I decided that that would be a healthy choice. But then I got it, and this is what it looked like:

Then I remembered: We are still in America.

There wasn’t much to do, and we decided to look at some shops. We found a mall with our guidebook. They had some boring shops. Then we found a really good shop! It had so many things, and we bought a lot. I bought a cap with Patrick Star on it and a t-shirt with the Ninja Turtles and a t-shirt with Spongebob that says: “Get yer nerd on” and has Spongebob with glasses (it is blue), and a green glass with the eyes and the mouth of Donatello the Ninja Turtle. I got a pair of glow-in-the-dark glasses too.

We went home then because it was getting late and we were planning to go out and have a party.

We used our guidebook to go to a place that has a nice bar, but we got there and there was nothing there. The place had closed long ago. So we tried another place. It was close to our hotel. It was a bar. We had a drink and a really good time.

Later we went home. We were so lucky, because right after we got home it started to rain a lot! We went to sleep to the sound of rain and frogs.

Our plan was to leave the next day, so we packed up and got into the car. We went to have breakfast at IHOP because it was next to the mall and we knew how to get there now. I had a coffee because I always got so sleepy driving. This is the coffee (it was so huge!!!! On the photo we put it next to a glass of orange juice so you can see how big it is):

We had to go up North and we went onto the 4-mile scenic drive that I had read about in the guidebook. It was like driving through a jungle. 

Then I felt cheeky and I drove into a field that had a kind of road. We drove down through the field:

At the end of the road we had a beautiful view of the sea. There was also a small hut someone had put up made of wood and really smelly. This was the view:

We left again. Then I saw a sign of a waterfall! We decided to go there and look at it and hopefully swim in it. It wasn’t a swimming waterfall again, instead another trail. 

On our way back to our road we passed a guy selling coconuts. He said he is from San Francisco. We each got a coconut to drink.

We drove on towards the beach we wanted to go to. We got lost and a guy with horses and a donkey told us how to get there. It was a road and we had to have 4-wheel drive to go down. I asked the guy there how to engage our 4-wheel drive and he showed me how. We drove down. Then we took a wrong turn and came to a river. There was a man there who told us we can drive inside the river, because it’s a road (but only with 4-wheel drive). He said he was from Romania or Slovakia or something. We said we are all Chinese. He said I look so white, but he can see it in my eyes that I am actually also Chinese. He said we should go to the beach later and he would be there too (we weren’t so keen on that). 

We drove down the river. It was so beautiful and fun!

After a while we decided to drive back to the beach. A car was coming towards us on the river so I had to back up and find a way to let him pass. That was annoying.

We stayed there for a while and I went inside the water but the waves were so wild (but not as wild as on the black sand beach!). We then drove back up to continue our journey. This was what it looked like driving back up:

We started driving to our hotel in Waimea which is up North. It was to be our last destination.

part three of review of big island

This is part number 3 of the review I am doing about Big Island!

After we ate our lunch, we felt like we had so much more energy again, so we went back inside the park. We wanted to stop at the underground lava tunnel, but there was no parking so we drove on and we decided to come back there later. We drove a long way. All the time we passed craters of lava, and landscapes of old lava. They had signs next to them about the date of the lava flow. We passed one, and it looked like it was kind of recent, but it was hard. It was really hot, so I think maybe it was still hot from the lava, but the sun was also shining so it may have been so hot from the sun. This is what it looked like. It looked so new because it was shiny:

You could hike over the old lava, but we didn’t do that because it seemed boring because basically it was just old lava all the time. We wanted to see more cool stuff.

We drove on, and then we came to the end of the road. It said on the map that the road was closed from then on because of “recent lava flows”. It was right by the sea. We parked and we were so happy to find toilets there! They were the kind of toilets that just had a really big whole in the ground and you could see everything inside. I always hate those toilets because the thought is so disgusting, but actually they never smell bad or anything (even though you can see poop). I don’t know how that works. 

There was a long way to walk, but there was a sign about how dangerous it is. But we weren’t scared, so we walked on. It was hot but nice.

There were lots of people walking on, but we saw some palm trees and they were just a few and so random, and it looked so nice, so we went there. It was really nice. Some of the trees had fallen over, like after a storm, but it was probably because of something about the volcano.

Then we decided to go back to the lava tunnel. Later I thought about this, and I think it might have been a bad idea because if we went on we would have seen the newest lava. But there was no flowing lava anywhere while we were there (I asked a volcano park person). But I still wish we had walked on!

When we got to the tunnel we found parking. We were so excited to go inside! It was like a real tunnel that was made because hot lava went through it. It looked so beautiful. They had lights inside, but then there was a gate and they had a sign that said you can only go on if you have a flashlight. We had two flashlights because we were prepared for this, they call it the “dark side”. We went all the way to the end and turned off our flashlights. It was so dark. I never saw so much darkness before. But it was not scary, it was so calm and nice. Then other people came and we hid behind a stone wall and turned off our lights and scared them! They were so scared. Then we left and we scared them again! They were still scared but less. Then they scared someone else together with us. Then we left.

After this we drove on to the other side of the park. A lot of the park was closed because of the fumes (we would die if we breathed them), so we went to the last open part. It was the same thing as the first part we saw (the volcano fart kind of thing). There was a small “volcano museum” inside, and we looked at it. They also had a shop. We asked about seeing flowing lava, and the woman said we can’t see that, but we can see the smoke turn red when it gets dark (from fire stuff inside the volcano). It was still light, so we had to wait two hours! We weren’t sure if to stay for it or not. We decided to stay. We didn’t know what to do so we discussed it for a long time and drove around. After half an hour we went back to the Lava Rock Cafe (I wrote about this in the part 2 of the review), and ate something. We ate really slow because we had so much time. Then we drove back to the volcano really slow. We waited in the car a bit because it was warmer, then we went outside to see the red volcano fire. This is what it looked like:

Then we quickly left because it was cold and we still had to drive to Hilo.

We drove to Hilo in the rain. It was also misty. But it wasn’t very far to get to Hilo. We got to our hotel, the “Hilo Seaside Hotel” (it was the same series as the one we had in Kona but we didn’t even notice it when we booked it, we just thought they don’t have very original names for hotels on Big Island) and there we started to hear such a loud sound! It was frogs!!! They were so loud! It sounded like we are in a jungle!

Our room was a little bit more disgusting than the one in Kona, and the hotel was so loud, and the frogs were loud too (but in a nice way), but we were sleepy and slept well.

This is the end of review part three! Next review I will tell you what happened next.

big island review - number two

This is more review of being on Big Island. 

After the Black Sand Beach we went into our car again. We had to drive to our next hotel which was in “Volcano”. Not inside of a volcano, but the town is called Volcano because it is next to the big volcano national park (the name is not so creative I think). It was a nice drive there, but it got really cloudy and then the windshield was getting wet. But our roof was open, and it wasn’t raining. But it was cold so we put on the roof. I think we were driving through a lot of clouds that made the car wet. This is what it looked like:

Volcano is further up and inside the island, so it was really cloudy and much colder. We stayed at a Bed and Breakfast which was so nice. We stayed in the “Pele Suit”. It was nice. The best thing was that the mattresses had this thing inside you could turn on, called “Sunbeam”, and you could turn it on to heat your bed. It felt nice because it was actually kind of cold there, but with the Sunbeam it was warm.

Then we were hungry so we wanted to eat. Volcano is a very small town, and basically it has just one road, and everything is on that road. So we drove down the road and we saw a restaurant, but they weren’t open yet, so we went to another one called “Lava Rock Cafe”, kind of like Hard Rock Cafe, but with Lava because it’s in Volcano. They don’t have a website. 

I ordered a Loco Moco because that’s a famous dish in Hawaii and my brother told me I should order it. I was hungry, and then my Loco Moco came. This was it:

It is a hamburger patty with an egg on top, on white rice and gravy on it. I ate it. I don’t know if it was on purpose or a mistake, but there was no salt in it, and it tasted like nothing. It wasn’t very good, but I don’t know if it’s because I don’t like Loco Moco or because they don’t do it well in the Lava Rock Cafe. Maybe they don’t put salt on it because they want to be healthy. But it is a hamburger patty in gravy, so I don’t know if it helps to use no salt. Probably not. 

After we ate it was too early to go to bed but too late to go to the volcano park. We asked the waitress at the Lava Rock Cafe what we can do. She said there is nothing to do in Volcano, but there is a bowling lane. So we decided to go there. The bowling lane is inside the “Volcanoes National Park”. You have to pay 10 dollars per car to go inside, but that was okay because we had only one car and the entrance is valid for 7 days and we had a plan to go in the next day anyway. 

It was hard to find the bowling place. It is in the area where there are some houses (after the visitor center and the steam vents, on the right). But we found it. We played bowling and I won!!!! I have never won in bowling before, because I’m actually a really bad bowler. But I was so good, that I won the whole round! Here is a photo of my scores (I am the toppest row):

Next to us were some small kids bowling. They were so small, one of them was like 3 or something, but they were carrying their bowling balls and they put them on a rack where they pushed them down. They were really good at it! The bowling cost us $15.

Then in the room next door they had so many video games, like an arcade in Italy! My friends played a game of shooting people, like some kind of war game, and I played a game of shooting as a Sheriff/Cowboy, but somehow I didn’t know how to use it, or it was broken, because I kept shooting but it didn’t work. But I had about 5 rounds, but I lost each of them with zero points. It was such a stupid game, I was so upset! I played the war shooting game too later, and it was much better.

Then I played some table tennis but I wasn’t very good, so a little boy came and he told me that he wants to play instead of me (with my friend) because he is waiting for his cousin to come and he is a better player (he wasn’t really). So I played a fighting game, I think it was Tekken. I like that game a lot but I wasn’t very good at it either because I was used to playing it on the Playstation (the old gray one).

Then two men came to us and they said there is a free game of air hockey, and no one is there. So we went, and there really was a free game, just like that! In fact, there was another free game after that too! I am good at air hockey and I beat my friends all the time. 

It was kind of late then and we were so sleepy! We went home to go to bed so we would wake up early again to go to the Volcanoes Park.

The first thing we saw at the volcano place was a big crater, and on the far side there was an opening with smoke coming out. I think that was the volcano opening. It looked like a volcano fart:

Then we went to another crater. You could hike around it, but it would take two hours (we heard a guide say that in the visitor center) so we didn’t want to do that. But then we walked on and on, and we decided to just do the whole walk! First it went through a forest and it was so nice, then it went inside the crater!!!!

It was such a nice walk, but the last part of going up in the forest was so bad, because we are all not so fit and were out of breath fast. When we got to the car, we were so tired. We left the park and went to eat in the restaurant where we wanted to eat the day before, but had been closed. I had a sandwich with Mahi Mahi.

travel review of big island - part one

This is a review about Big Island which is an island in Hawaii. It is actually called “Island of Hawai’i” but someone gave it the nickname “Big Island” because it is the biggest island in Hawaii, and if someone would say “I went to the Island of Hawai’i”, people would say: “Oh wow, Hawaii, which island?”. So “Big Island” is more convenient to say.

Big Island has two big airports, one is in Kona which is in the West and one in Hilo which is in the East. It is cheaper to fly to Kona I think. You should try and check both before you fly. We also rented a car online with Expedia, but I didn’t print the “vouchers” which made us have to pay again for something we already paid for (but later I found the vouchers online and we didn’t have to pay it again). You need to bring your vouchers because the car rental agency won’t know that you already paid the car insurance, because I think Expedia doesn’t communicate with them at all, it’s a really stupid system.

We landed in Kona and it was so hot and humid. We got our car and we went to our Hotel. It was the “Kona Seaside Hotel”. It was okay. It was not so nice inside because the stuff on the bed was kind of ugly, but it was very clean and okay. It also had a nice location that was close to a lot of things.

This is the car we got. It is a “Jeep Wrangler Unlimited”. It is red and you can take off the front of the roof, which we did mostly. It has 4-wheel drive which is important if you go to Big Island, because you need it a lot to go to nice places. It was 10.99 dollars per day which is a really good price for a good car.

On this picture above, we went to the beach to have lunch. I turned off the car but I came out and the lights were still on, so I went inside again to see if I forgot to turn them off (I didn’t, because it is just a good system where the lights stay on longer after you leave, because it you are in the dark it’s practical). But then if you look closely, I forgot the key in the door!!! After lunch we came back and the key was still in the door!! I was so happy, because I heard a lot about people breaking into cars there, but we were so lucky that no one stole our car.

We went into the town and looked at all the shops for tourists, the pier, the church, the nice house which is a museum and we also had ice cream. After that we had seen everything, and we didn’t know what to do. We had a good guide book and we looked inside it. We decided to go to K-Mart and buy water there. We bought water that comes from deep inside the sea of Hawaii, but it tasted like normal water (they took the salt out). Then we finished K-Mart and looked at Macy’s. Then we finished Macy’s and went to Target. Target was so much fun, because it was like a cool place in Kailua-Kona to hang out at (many people were parked there). These are some photos:

After we finished Target we went to Petco and to OfficeMax but they were a bit boring and then we went to have Sushi for dinner. Then when we came out, it was dark and most of the cars where gone. We went to go into our car, but our car was gone too!!!! We looked everywhere, but none of the cars there was our car, so someone had stolen it! There were teenagers next to us getting into a car and I was sure they stole our car because they were shouting at us and laughing a lot!!!! It was so bad, we didn’t know what to do. I went to look at another car that was parked in the area, because it was a car like ours, but a different color. And it was so weird, because then I looked inside and the inside was the same as our car!!! So I tried to put the key inside, and it fit and the car opened! It was our car!! But it had a new color!!! This is a photo of what it looked like:

Kind of like brown. It was so strange because we thought it changed color, but it just looked brown at night. We were so happy that AGAIN no one stole our car. It was the second time in just one day!!!

The next day we got up so early and went to drive to the South of the island. We went to McDonald’s for breakfast, but I wanted chicken nuggets but they were only serving breakfast (like “Egg McMuffin”)!! I didn’t like that so I didn’t get it. I stopped at a small restaurant and there I got a breakfast to go that I ate in the car. They had a nice view and nice staff, and really good photos:

They also had this funny sign on their Casio cash register. (PS: someone ordered $51 worth of breakfast?)

We got to South Point. It is the most south point of the whole USA! It was so nice. The water was so blue, I wanted to go inside, but I would have had to jump inside, and I was a bit scared to do that. We saw two boys do it, but my friends didn’t want to do it and that made me scared too.

We found this boy, he wanted to hitchhike. It is really illegal to do that and also dangerous. But we were nice and we took him up the road (it was too far to walk and so hot too, and he was so nice and he had a skateboard). This is him. I don’t remember his name:

(PS: he is doing the famous Hawaiian hand signal called “Shaka” which I also did in a lot of photos. It means: “hang loose” and “relax”)

We went to the “Black Sand Beach” then. It really has black sand, and I thought that it would make me dirty and leave black color behind, but it wasn’t like that. It was basically like normal sand but in black (but it was less smooth so it hurt a bit to walk on it).

It always looked like it will rain. I didn’t know which was blacker: the sand or the sky! (Joke, because the sand was blacker for sure)

This was review number one.

I’m in Hawaii now guys, on Big Island. Kona is a really boring town but we are only here one night and they have a Target.

We have such a nice rental car that is a Jeep. It is red. It costs only 11 dollars per day. I am the only one driving it and I love it a lot. I can’t wait to buy my own Jeep. Our Jeep is so nice, in the night it changes color. It’s like brown. We thought our Jeep is stolen but it just turned brown.

Tomorrow we are going to the South Point, to the beach and the black and white sand. And the Volcano area. It will be so much fun I think.

I wrote this poem about my flight on the airplane. Me and my friends didn’t get a seat together which was stupid. This is what happened on my flight when I was sitting alone without my friends. It’s all true!!!!

I’m on the plane in the last row
Best seat for the airplane show
I have the middle seat
Not much space to put my feet
Because the chinese lady to my right
Is wearing shoes by coach
And I rather not get them dirty

“Do you want a sandwich?”
She says it so friendly and I say yes
Getting myself into financial mess

week in preview

Tomorrow I am going to go to Hawaii. My flight is at 6 AM from San Jose where I am going to go with a shuttle bus. It is picking us up at 2 AM or 3 AM. I am going to “Big Island” which is Hawaii’s biggest island. I am going for one week to look at the island. I am going to pre-queue my paintings to post when I am not here. But I have a Blackberry with internet, so I can still post good poems and photos of Hawaii. I am so excited. Please tell me if you know any good places on Big Island!

i have so many plans

I am so excited because I am going camping tomorrow for three nights in Big Sur or somewhere. It will be so good. I am also sad, because I don’t know if there is 3G service there, so maybe I can’t update my blog (!!!) so I am going to make a “queue” of posts that publish at a time I say. It will be like I just published them, but actually I didn’t. They publish themselves.

Also, I am going to go to Hawaii (!!!) on June 9th. It will be so great. I am going for holidays. I am so excited. I have never been to Hawaii before. I will be at the southern most tip of the United States ever on Thursday the 10th. I will take a lot of photos. I am going to ride a horse and look at a volcano.

Also: I hope you have a good memorial day (it’s a holiday in the USA). It’s a day where you remember people in troops who died. Please memorize them with us today.
